Swaziland : Swati teachers to go on strike on June 13

The Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) last week resolved to embark on an indefinite strike to force the Swazi government to increase teachers’ salaries by 4.5%.

The strike was initially supposed to take place from the 11th to the 13th of April this year but the teachers’ union abandoned it in face of intimidation from the state through both the security apparatus and the courts.

The teachers have since resolved to down their teaching tools and stay away from work until the government yields to their demands. With the country’s students already suffering from lack of quality education due to the government’s misplaced spending priorities, their plight will only deteriorate further.

In instances like these, as the worst affected party in this scenario, they should join their teachers and protest against being systematically reduced into second class citizens by having an inferior education imposed on them.

The Swaziland Solidarity Network [SSN] support the teachers demands.
