Mariam al- Sadiq al Mahdi, Sudanese citizen and vice president of the NationalUmma Party
(NUP), was arrested on 12th of Augustin Khartoum whereas she was coming back from a
trip to Europe where she met with severalmembers of European parliament among other
meetings.
Since then, the National Intelligence and Security Service hasrefused to inform Mariam al
Sadiq al Mahdi’s family of the charges against her. The conditions of her detention are still
largely unknown, despite numerous requests from her family.
Mrs. Mariam al- Sadiq al-Mahdi has been actively involved in favour of a process for peace
and democracy in Sudan, which is essentialto end the war currently undermining the
Sudanese state.
With my colleaguesIvo Vajgl (ALDE, Slovenia), Mariya Gabriel( EPP, Bulgaria),Ana Gomes
(S&D,Portugal),Judith Sargentini (Greens-EFA, The Netherlands) and Charles Goerens
(ALDE, Luxembourg),we called upon the Sudanese authorities to make every effort for her
release. We also expressed our concern to the the European Commission President-elect
Jean-Claude Juncker,to the High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and
to the EU Commissioner for humanitarian assistance Kristalina Georgieva.
Amnesty International also launched an "urgent action" operation for her release :
