Egyptian army arrest revolutionary labour lawyer

Haitham Mohamedain, one of Egypt’s leading labour lawyers and an activist with the Revolutionary Socialists, has been arrested today, Thursday.

He was travelling from Cairo to Suez to meet workers who had asked him to represent them.

The army detained him at a checkpoint and he has since been moved to a police station in Suez.

The Revolutionary Socialists (RS) report that Haitham is being charged with assault of an police officer.

Haitham has been an activist and revolutionary for many years. He plays a leading role in defending workers in struggle. He recently represented striking Suez steel workers in a dispute which was broken up by the army.

He joined the mass protests against Mohamed Mursi on 30 June but he and the RS have publicly opposed the army taking control of governing Egypt since Mursi was ousted.

In a recent interview he said, “General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is leading a counter-revolution under the cover of suppressing Islamists in the streets,” he said. “The Mubarak regime is being revived again.”

RS member Wassim Wagdy told Socialist Worker, “Haitham needs international solidarity from revolutionaries everywhere. Our enemy is the same wherever we are. He is not just fighting for revolution in Egypt but is part of a struggle for a better world.”
