  South Africa’s LGBTI community has reacted strongly against a statement made by ANC MP and Congress of Traditional Leaders of SA (Contralesa) president Patekile Holomisa on the rights of gays and lesbians.

• Ugandan High Court endorses closure of LGBT rights workshop

  The decision of the Ugandan High Court published on July 9, 2014, endorsing the government closure of a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights workshop violates the right to freedom of assembly, Human Rights Watch said today. Justice Stephen Musota ruled against four LGBT rights activists who had sued the ethics and integrity minister, Simon Lokodo, for shutting down a February 2012 workshop.

  Last month, Uganda made international headlines when it became the 76th country in the world to make homosexuality illegal.
  Following the new ‘anti-gay bill’, signed on 24 February 2014 by the country’s long-serving president Yoweri Museveni, the penalty for gay sex or same-sex marriage is life imprisonment for men and seven years for women.

  In 24 hours, Uganda’s President Museveni is planning to sign into law one of the worst anti-gay laws in the world. He thinks he has more to win than to lose by targeting gay people.
