Botswana : UMBRELLA FOR DEMOCRATIC CHANGE LEADERSHIP FORUM

One hundred and sixty-one (161) leaders from contracting parties of the Umbrella for Democratic Change, being the Botswana Movement for Democracy, Botswana National Front and Botswana People’s Party, led by their leaders Messrs. Gomolemo Motswaledi, Duma Boko and Kumbulani William (standing-in for Motlatsi Molapisi) met on Saturday 3rd August and Sunday 4th August 2012 at the City of Francistown (Francistown Technical College). The aim of the Leadership Forum was to provide an opportunity for leaders of the party to interact on matters concerning the Umbrella Project, evaluate progress, and provide needful guidance on things yet to be done.

The Leadership Forum :

1. Accepted with thanks, the Official Opening statement from Mk. Ndaba Gaolathe who officially opened the forum as well as motivation statements from President Duma Boko, President Gomolemo Motswaledi and Vice President Kumbulani William.

2. Adopted the Constitution of the Umbrella for Democratic Change that has been tendered with the Registrar of Societies and accepted the responsibility to engage with their structures about improvements that should be made to it even as the Registration process is on-going.

3. Adopted the ‘Proposed Strategy for the Allocation of Council Wards for 2014 Elections’ which has a six (6) step criteria for immediate implementation.

4. Discussed the proposed Policies for the Umbrella for Democratic Change and accepted ;

4.1 The Social Democratic platform on which the policies are based.

4.2 That the policies should be subjected to a process of wide consultation with the public and experts.

5. Endorsed the 8th of September 2012 as the date for the Launching of the Umbrella for Democratic Change to be held in Gaborone as well as the Inter-party Coordinating Committee for the said Launch.

6. Finally, evaluated the past Bye Elections that the contacting partners were, in the recent past, collectively involved in,namely ; Mokoboxane, Lenganeng and Monarch West wards as well as expressed concern on the less than adequate performance even as in the former two elections were lost marginally. In going forward, the forum received a comprehensive plan from the Botswana Movement for Democracy in respect of Sebele Ward as a case for collectively proposing improvements on coming bye elections.
