Ethiopie : OPEN LETTER TO THE UN COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

High Commissioner,

Your recent statement that the killing of 100 people at Houla (Syria) “may constitute a crime against humanity” has prompted us to remind you that the massacre of more 1000 Anuaks (Ethiopians) in Gambella a few years back is surely a crime against humanity. The order for the massacre was proved to have been given by none other than the ongoing prime minister Meles Zenawi. It is time to accuse Meles Zenawi of crimes against humanity, war crimes and of ethnic cleansing and possibly of genocide.

It is not only the massacre in Gambella that is on record. The summary shooting of more than 200 people in Addis Abeba in 2005 is another case in point. The brutal executions and murders in the Ogaden are still going on. Ethnic cleansing has been practiced against the Amhara people with much bloodshed in the process. After all, the regime of Meles Zenawi practices systematic torture and holds more than 35,000 people as political prisoners in very inhumane and degrading conditions. An ongoing illegal land grab and forced resettlement axtion has made hundreds of thousands interna refugees and victims of injustice.

This is why we call upon you, High Commissioner, to raise your voice to condemn the crimes against humanity being committed in Ethiopia by Meles Zenawi.
