Ethiopia has a horrendous human rights record – but that didn't stop its election this week to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member. It's worth noting too that Ethiopia – implicated in the deaths of hundreds of peaceful protesters in recent months – is also a member of the UN Human Rights Council.
Ethiopia, among Africa's leading jailors of journalists, has decimated independent civil society and misused its counterterrorism law to stifle peaceful dissent. (…)

Since November, state security forces have killed hundreds of protesters and arrested thousands in Oromia, Ethiopia's largest region. It's the biggest political crisis to hit the country since the 2005 election but has barely registered internationally. And with the protests now in their fifth month, there is an almost complete information blackout.
A teacher arrested in December told me, “In Oromia the world doesn't know what happens for months, years or ever. No one ever comes to speak (…)

Student protests are spreading throughout Ethiopia's Oromia region, as people demonstrate against the possibility that Oromo farmers and residents living near the capital, Addis Ababa, could be evicted from their lands without appropriate – or possibly any – compensation. Social media is filled with images of bloodied protesters ; there are credible reports of injuries and arrests in a number of towns ; and local police have publicly acknowledged that three students have died so far.
