On the occasion of May Day 2024, it is imperative to say that 42% of Namibians are undernourished while there has been a 32% increase in millionaires over the past 10 years. The country is burdened with an economic system that generates monstrous suffering for the majority, the working class, on one side, but obscene wealth for a few, the elite, on the other side. There is hence a vital need for price controls on food and other essentials (housing, utilities, energy, and so forth) to make (…)

More than 24 000 jobs were lost in the Namibian private sector from 2018 to 2023.
This shows the private sector is not the solution to mass unemployment as it is profit-driven.
At the same time, our public sector has skewed priorities.
Despite 8 000 unemployed qualified teachers, the government recruited 1 000 police officers and 1 600 soldiers in 2023.
The nation needs a dialogue not only about the long-term unemployment crisis, but also about colour and party-political (…)

WHERE IS JAKOB Marengo ? This question is fundamental to an important novel – entitled 'Morenga' (1978) – written about Marengo by the German author Uwe Timm.
Given the centrality of the reparations and genocide debate in Namibian politics, this is undoubtedly an appropriate time for Namibians to read this anti-colonial and anti-Eurocentric story that introduced Marengo to a global audience.
Although Timm uses the alternative spelling of the surname, the title of the novel confirms that (…)

THE CALLOUS KILLING of George Floyd led to a global uprising against racism, including the toppling of many statues associated with white supremacist ideology.
Such symbols are crucial reminders of history, in particular the way in which that history is celebrated. Therefore, the recent protest at the bust of Curt von Francois, and the demand for its removal comes at an opportune moment. It is lamentable that the image of a German-speaking coloniser, who ordered the Hornkranz massacre – (…)
