Dear Comrades and friends of the workers movement in South Africa
It is a terribly sad day. NUMSA was expelled in the early hours of this morning. For the record the vote was 33 to 24. As Andrew Chriwa, President of NUMSA said, NUMSA is COSATU. It formed COSATU, with others of course. It shaped COSATU during its different phases and histories.
The Working class will face greater and more bold attacks from the neoliberal state and from predatory capitalism. During this entire saga, we (…)

Though the DLF is not standing in the 2014 elections we cannot and will not be silent. We support the vote No Campaign as articulated by Sidikiwe Vukani. This is a step forward in breaking with support for parties that collaborate with or represent capital and its interests.
The Sidikiwe Vukani no Campaign must be placed in context. As we mark 20 years since the end of Apartheid and the advent of democracy, there is a deep rupturing of the post apartheid social consensus in the face of (…)

Comrades, its once again the time to dig deep. Things are beginning to change. The ANC's hegemony is eroding. Corruption, cronyism, the Marikana massacre and an upturn in working class struggle is rapidly changing the situation. We are entering a new period where great opportunities exist for the recomposition of the labour movement, for uniting workplace and community struggles and to create a dynamic towards the formation of a genuine left alternative to the ANC with strong roots in the (…)

As expected the COSATU Central Executive Committee took a decision to suspend Vavi, its general secretary. An internal probe will now sit and in all likelihood find him guilty of bringing COSATU into disrepute and he will be permanently removed from the leadership of COSATU. Women's abuse is a very serious offence. Abuse of power is very serious. No-one should be above the law. In this case Vavi's guilt has not been established.
On the 16th August 2012, post apartheid democracy lurched into a horror. It was estimated 34 mineworkers at the Lonmin Mine in the North West province were brutally gunned down by police and in total over 70 workers have been injured. The death toll at this stage is still not completely verified, with the community still reporting loved ones missing and not accounted for in official body counts.
