What was expected to be an exciting and reflective World Press Freedom Day celebration turned dismal and confrontational when the director of the Executive Protection Services (EPS) made scathing remarks, threatening Liberian journalists.
Mr. Othello Warrick did not mince words, saying that as Director of the EPS "I will get at anyone who intrudes into the intelligence of the presidency."
He issued the threat when he served as a panelist on the 20th observance of World Press Freedom Day, (…)

The Center for Media Studies & Peace Building (CEMESP) has launched its 2011 annual Report and Account of Attacks on Free Expression in Liberia with a challenge to continue its fight against activities which challenge the right to free speech. Speaking at the launch of the report, CEMESP Executive Director Malcolm Joseph regretted that 2011 proved to be a "rather sad" year for free speech in Liberia. He said the "sadness was because the media is still being subjected to attacks, (…)

Delegates of the 23 November 2011 Robertsport FOI Conference have, among other things, petitioned the organizer, Center for Media Studies and Peace Building (CEMESP), to establish an alternative data bank on all sectors that fall within the scope of public and relevant private bodies as custodians of information, as stipulated in the Liberia Freedom of Information Act 2010. The participants say they want CEMESP to maintain the multi-sectoral data bank as the reference point in the event (…)

The "Frontpage Africa" newspaper risks being shut down if it does not comply with a court ruling ordering it to pay US$1.5m in damages, plus court costs, for libelling a former government official. The court order emanates from a publication by the paper that reported on alleged fraud committed by Dr. J Chris Toe, as former Liberia Agriculture Minister.
Dr. Toe is now said to be demanding the aforesaid colossal amount after a court verdict upholding an earlier ruling was passed in October (…)
