There was a widely supported general strike in Chad that lasted for a month from 20th February, 2024. This was over the military government increasing the price of fuel by 40% in the middle of February and the coming to an end of the three year social pact between some trade unions and the government without many agreed actions having been implemented. Indefinite strikes were also held more briefly in the education and health sectors from mid-March.

Parliamentary democracy is now seen as the best way to rule countries. But this acceptance of democracy by the capitalist ruling class is a relatively new development. In the 19th century the British ruling class had a long fight against extending the vote to poor people. It was only in the middle of the 20th century that women were allowed to vote in France, for example. Even later, democracy was extended to the colonies, often only after they had gained independence.

The French army is losing ground in the Sahel. Admittedly, it can boast of a few "successes" such as the neutralization of more than 600 jihadists, including Oumarou Mobo Modhi (specialist in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices), Baye Ag Bakabo (author of the kidnapping in which French journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon were assassinated), Adnan Abou Walid al-Sahraoui (responsible for the Islamic State group in the Greater Sahara, EIGS), or more recently, at the end (…)

Climate change is due to the activities of major companies, mainly those based in the industrialised countries. So in 2012, it was estimated that around two thirds of carbon dioxide emissions come from companies based in China, US, Europe, Japan and Russia.
Only 90 major companies are estimated to be responsible for nearly two thirds of climate change gas emissions. However, it is the poor across the world who are suffering the effects of climate change. The United Nations Climate Change (…)

The minimum wage should have been revised by now – but little progress seems to have been made. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) need to immediately lead a strong campaign to ensure that our demand for N66,000 now is realised as soon as possible. Five years ago, in December 2010, the NLC and TUC demanded N52, 200 as the minimum wage based on the then prevailing economic situation and indicators.
In the early 1980s, President Sankara was a beacon of hope against the increased inequality and insecurity structural adjustment introduced across Africa.
