March against repression in Zimbabwe

Around 150 people gathered outside the former offices of the Zimbabwe consulate in Johannesburg yesterday from a wide range of organizations including Anti-Privatisation Forum, Cosatu, Democratic Left Front, LBGTI groups and the MDC.
Everyone had a chance to speak and we then took over the streets to march to the Provincial Legislature, where we handed over a memorandum demanding that the SA government intervene.
The march was loud and colourful as leaflets were distributed along the way. Many Zimbabweans were present but the majority of the marchers were probably South African – a great thing in that it demonstrates the development of a consciousness of solidarity beyond ourselves, and linking our own issues to others’ issues. This is an excellent public start to what needs to be built into an ongoing campaign against repression in Zimbabwe.
