Nigeria:THE MASSES ARE RISING IN PROTEST AGAINST HUNGER

Socialist Labour is in total and unconditional support of the mass hunger protests. Yesterday, the people were overwhelmingly peaceful as they trooped out in their untold numbers. Members of Socialist Labour helped to organise protests in several states. The masses heard the call to #EndHunger and whole communities came out.

We are beginning to see a real, peaceful (except for security forces) peoples’ movement on the streets across almost all geopolitical zones. Those of us that tried to organise over the last few weeks also inspired mass ‘spontaneous’ protests in popular areas.

This shows the depths of poverty and hunger that most people have been thrown into by the heartless policies of the government. We will never know the numbers who are dying daily from lack of food and inability to pay for health fees and medicines. We are deeply saddened for the friends and families of those murdered by the security forces yesterday. We have to ensure that their deaths were not in vain, by continuing to mobilise.

Not only were the protests massive, but in many places they have the support of the vast majority of the population. Okada and keke drivers in Abuja, for example, are carrying branches and leaves in solidarity with the protestors, even as they try to earn enough to eat.

We call on the protestors to remain on the streets until our demands are met !

We need to use the confidence that these mass protests give to the people. Thousands more protestors now have real hope that socialism or real change is possible. We need to find new people who will join Socialist Labour so that next time the protests will be even bigger and more successful !
