In January 2002, Eritrean journalist Aaron Berhane ran to freedom across the Eritrean/Sudanese border, leaving behind his wife and three children in what is now considered to be one of the most censored countries in the world.
“We were encountered by the patrolling army ; I had no choice but to flee to Sudan. And they did open fire. I don’t even know how I managed to flee,” says Berhane, describing the end of his escape from Eritrea.

Radio journalist’s sentence galvanises call to end criminal defamation in Uganda

In Ethiopia, "Feteh" editor jailed during trial
7 septembre 2012, par Committee to Protect JournalistsEthiopian authorities must immediately release Temesghen Desalegn, editor of the leading weekly Feteh, who was ordered jailed today pending his trial on defamation, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today. Ouganda : WBS TV journalist threatened with death while on assignment
6 avril 2012, par HRNJ-UgandaMulindwa Mukasa, a correspondent with local private television station Wavah Broadcasting Service (WBS) TV, was arrested at Nabweru Parents School, a private primary school, while following up a news story about the treatment of the pupils. Ouganda : Journalist detained, assaulted by police
23 avril 2011, par Human Rights Network for Journalists(HRNJ-Uganda/IFEX) - Kampala, 11 April 2011 - Journalist Ssemakula Bambalazabwe, of the Bukedde television station, was arrested and detained for 12 hours at the Mutundwe police post.
Ssemakula was arrested on 9 April 2011 at 9pm while covering a scuffle at Kampala University’s Mutundwe campus between students and the university administration. The scuffle ensued after some of the students’ property had been thrown out of a building in a bid to create space for new foreign students.

Nabatanzi, 24, was shot in the right leg while covering opposition Democratic Party (DP) supporters who were celebrating the release of their leader, Norbert Mao, on 2 May 2011.
